More than 1 in 3 children in the UK struggle to spell their own names until the age of 6, reveals new research commissioned by Birds Eye.

This is despite the fact that parents are pulling out all the stops to make reading and spelling enjoyable and fun, such as extra screen time for each book read, treats as rewards, pocket money and interactive storytelling with character voices.

Parents are also using techniques such as spelling games, pointing out new words in books, and using letter-shaped foods at mealtimes to encourage early literacy skills.

Family mealtimes were almost unanimously (96 per cent) voted vital for child development and for spending quality time together. Parents in the survey reported trying educational yet fun activities to make mealtimes more enjoyable while supporting developmental growth. These included making dinner together, plating food in a creative way with animal figures and cutting food into letters. The research was commissioned to mark the 40th anniversary of Alphabites.
