Brighton and Hove has been revealed as the most expensive area in England, outside London, to raise a child in 2022. Most areas where costs are highest are in the South of England, with the exceptions being Manchester and Nottingham

The study, conducted by childcare and education experts Little Ones London, looked into childcare costs around England as well as the average rent for a two-bedroom property, and compared them to the average salary in the area.

Brighton and Hove parents totted up total monthly costs of £2,195.80, amounting to 110.45 per cent of the average monthly salary of almost £2,000. The costs are a sum of average monthly childcare costs for 30 hours a week (£970) and the average rent for a two-bedroom property in the area (£1,225).

Second on the list is Bath and North East Somerset in South West England. The area’s total monthly costs consist of £945 in childcare and £1,019 for renting a two-bedroom property, which totals £1,964, and adds up to 106.79 per cent of the average monthly salary of £1,839.20.

Manchester comes in third with a total monthly cost in the metropolitan area of £1,833 – made up of £966.90 for childcare and £867 in rent. This equals 99.67 per cent of the average monthly salary of £1,840.

Bristol in the South West, and Nottingham in the East Midlands, come fourth and fifth in the rankings.
