High flyers of the future

Ambitious pre-schoolers already have their minds firmly focused on their future career paths, according to new research. And they are aiming high, with doctors and nurses, vets and footballers as the top professions preschoolers aspire to.

Top five career choices for pre-school girls are: doctor or nurse (35 per cent), teacher (21 per cent), vet (18 per cent), ballerina (17 per cent) and hairdresser (11 per cent).

And for the boys it’s footballer (23 per cent), police officer (22 per cent), fire fighter (21 per cent), doctor or nurse (19 per cent) and astronaut (12 per cent).

The research also found that fame and glamour is no longer a career goal for Gen Alpha girls who said they’d prefer to follow a career path where they help people or animals rather than be a popstar, YouTuber/influencer or even follow the footsteps of Liz Truss and Theresa May in becoming Prime Minister.

The research, which was commissioned by global children’s entertainment company Spin Master to highlight its new preschool franchise, Vida The Vet (available on Cbeebies, BBC iPlayer and YouTube) polled 1,000 UK parents of children aged two to five years.

Although almost half of the parents polled (48 per cent) said they worried about screentime, 70 per cent said they felt less guilty if it was fuelling their children’s future career aspirations. Nearly half of parents surveyed said that watching TV shows with animals encourage their children to want to become a vet when they grow up.
