Coming up for air

No less than 1 in 3 children in the UK are growing up in areas where they are exposed to dangerous levels of air pollution, according to UNICEF. Trevor Brewer, managing director of Solenco UK, outlines the impact of pollution on our little ones and highlights practical solutions.

‘Air pollution can increase the risk of long-term health issues, potentially causing reduced lung development and a higher risk of asthma and pneumonia. It can also negatively impact learning and concentration in early years children. Pregnant women and unborn babies are at risk too. It isn’t just at home: children can be at risk when they are at school and nursery and when they are travelling. Here are some simple steps to improve air quality for your children.’

• Improve ventilation - Open windows when the air quality is good and use vents or fans to keep indoor air fresh. Ensure the cooking area at home is well-ventilated by using extractor fans and opening windows to allow heat and fumes to escape.

• Avoid indoor pollutants – Be mindful of common indoor contaminants, such as building materials, paint products, cleaning supplies and household chemicals. Fumes from these can be toxic for everyone and especially for young children. Opt for natural, non-toxic alternatives where possible. Avoid burning indoor candles or incense in small spaces and limit the use of aerosol air fresheners, as they can release harmful chemicals into the air.

• Create a smoke-free environment – Don’t allow smoking indoors or near to your children, as second-hand smoke contains harmful chemicals.

• Use an air purifier – A high-quality air purifier with a HEPA-certified filter helps eliminate airborne pollutants like dust, allergens and pollen. Research supports the benefits—one study found that using an HEPA air purifier for three weeks can reduce airborne particles and enable children with asthma to lower their medication use.

• Introduce indoor plants – House plants improve indoor air quality by removing pollutants and can naturally help absorb toxins, creating a healthier living space.

• When travelling – Plan your route and avoid walking through busy traffic areas wherever possible.

• At school and nursery – Work with teachers and carers to ensure the environment is as toxin-free as possible. Most of the steps above are cost-effective and easy to apply in any environment, helping to keep children safe and healthy and boosting their learning potential.
