Canned treat

Did you know that switching to canned food could save families up to a third on their weekly food shop.
With the average UK household spending £129 a week on food for a family of four, according to children’s charity Coram, this could make a huge difference to families nationwide. A comparison of 25 of the most popular food products found that over two thirds of canned alternatives were cheaper.
Canned food initiative, Love Canned Food, has some easy food swaps to keep the food bills down, such as choosing canned fruit, veg, beef and fish. Top product switch changes include:
Tuna: fresh price per 100g £3.34, canned price £0.65.
Apple slices: fresh price per 100g £0.63, canned price £0.29.
Corned beef: fresh price per 100g £0.83, canned price £0.60.
Peas: fresh price per 100g £0.94, canned price £0.17.
Plum tomatoes: fresh price per 100g £0.32, canned price £0.13.
And that’s just a small sample of the savings to be made.
Love Canned Food claim canned trumps fresh when it comes to taste too. In a blind taste test by Manchester Metropolitan University, which pitched recipes made with fresh ingredients against those made with canned ingredients, over half (53 per cent) of recipes using canned food were pronounced as good if not better than those using fresh.
